Handicraft from the Indus Valley:
we present to you Southwest style baskets , elegantly hand crafted by tribal families in Pakistan.
This beautiful basket comes from the Indus Valley in Pakistan, known as the “cradle of civilization”. The Indus Valley civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Archaeologists have found Homo sapiens fossils in the region, dating back to 50,000 years ago. As early as 3,000 BC , an urban society known as Indus Civilization developed here.
Our baskets are made using a technique similar to that used by Native Americans in the United States.
Weaving Technique:
This basket is hand-woven by wrapping dyed palm leaves over a coiled bundle of river grass. The palm leaves are boiled in hot water using the appropriate colored dye. These leaves are then used along with the natural tone leaves to weave the basket. Sometimes these leaves are dyed multiple times to obtain the desired color. This is a very fine continuous stitch coil basket where a stitch to the previous coil is done at every wrap of the palm leaf around the grass coil. Such a basket can take many days, and depending on the design, sometimes weeks to weave.
Please note that it is handmade and unique . Slight deviations in size, design and color are quite possible.
