WEAVING PROCESS
- Dhurries are ancient flatly-weaved rugs having originated in this Part of the world since ancient times. These have strong, tightly - woven and rustic weaves with no pile or backing , making them not reversible. The hand - spun yarn used to make the rugs is hand - dyed with natural pigment producing long-lasting and vibrant colour’s.
- The ancient craft of weaving durries on wooden handlooms is time-consuming effort ; yet , effective in bringing a textured strength to the yarn.
- The artisans use panjas - a wooden tool with iron fingers like extensions of their own hands, tapping each coloured thread into place to create a beautiful durable textile.
- Dhurrie Weaving has traditionally been a ‘village industry’ in Pakistan and is considered a major life source to many villagers, providing income, occupation and creativity.
Usually , it is a family work engaging hard labour and consistency.
- After the yarns have been dyed and prepared , the artisans begin by winding both ends of the yarn to the wooden bales. The bamboo bales are then appropriately placed. These are the handles which are pulled during the process.
- Next the threads are pulled according to the desired pattern and design. Dhurrie rugs are a perfect way to combine the beauty of historic artistry with contemporary décor.
